The beginning of the 21st century started on a low note for Rallis. A successful enterprise during its long history, Rallis’ performance however in the previous decade had a chequered journey. It suffered its worst ever loss of Rs 107 crores in the year 2003. Post that, the Company did a significant turnaround, thereafter consolidating the performance and creating a path to grow profitably. It launched a structured approach titled Rallis Poised in 2007 to lead profitable growth and achieved Rs 100 crs profit in the year 2009. Through Rallis Poised agenda Company entered into a growth phase after consolidation of existing business and chalked out the plan for diversification in the agri-space, enhance international footprint and leveraging chemistry expertise for Contract Manufacturing.

The period 2005 to 2018 is eventful for Rallis from many angles. Under the Visionary leadership, Rallis not only strengthened its position in the Indian market through higher reach and penetration but also enhanced the relationship with farmers to build trust. Its initiative “Rallis Kisan Kutumb” created a platform for co-working with farmers to enhance farm outputs and support the farmers in terms of knowledge, products and agriculture best practices. It launched path breaking products like Applaud, Takumi, Ergon and many more to cater to multiple needs of farmers for crop protection and set the benchmark in the industry. Rallis has set up its state of art R&D center “Rallis Innovation Chemistry Hub-RICH” at Bangalore to come up with new products year on year as per agriculture needs. Along with crop protection products, Rallis further enhanced its portfolio with plant growth regulators helping farmers to get higher and quality produce from farms.

As a part of expansion of business, Rallis acquired Metahelix Life Sciences, a research based company on seeds at Bangalore. Metahelix has a strong presence in research, technical knowledge, germ plasm, hybrids and seed production. Now it is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rallis and selling quality seeds in Dhaanya brand. This acquisition in year 2010-11 built the strength of Rallis both in crop protection and seeds.

Beyond business, Rallis has always strived to bring changes to agriculture. Rallis acquired another company in FY13 named Zero Waste Agro Organics Limited having expertize in preparing organic soil health enhancer from by-products of sugar mills using microbes. The product is sold in the market in the brand name of “Geo Green” and shown significant impact in terms of yield in cash crops and fruits and vegetables. Rallis took up another initiative More Pulses “MoPu” in Tamilnadu in the year 2008 to help pulses farmers to increase farm yield by following package of practices provided by Rallis. After successful implementation of the program, it is expanded to Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. MoPu is well appreciated in different agri fora as a way not only to enhance pulses production in India but also contributing to addressing the nutrition deficiency.

In due course of time, with the rich experience in agri practices, wider product portfolio of crop protection, seeds, soil health enhancer, Rallis has embarked as a solution provider to Indian farmers and taken up customized agri-practices in cash crops like grapes, cumin, pomegranate with a year round engagement with farmers from seed to harvest. In the year 2016-17, it launched its solution oriented program Rallis Samrudh Krishi® with several package of practices for different crops and rolled it out across the country. The program has an encouraging response from farmers in enhancing the farm yield advising the farmers on right soil preparation, seed selection, water management, pest control and nutrition management. This innovative concept of Rallis is well appreciated across and Rallis Samrudh Krishi has won innovation awards at CII and IMC RBNQA in 2017. Furthermore, to leverage the digital technology and wider use of smart phones in rural India Rallis enhanced its connect with farmers through project “Drishti” for predictive analysis and Rallis Krishi Samadhan; app for day to day quick problem solving in agriculture.

Other than deep understanding of Indian Agriculture, Rallis’ strength in chemistry is explored for Contract manufacturing and it established specific CM facility at Ankleshwar. Rallis always remained in the forefront in addressing social issues. It took a decision to stop all high toxic red triangle products and closed its plant at Patencheru near Hyderabad. Now the portfolio of Rallis is having mostly the safe blue and green triangle products. Furthermore, due to rapid urbanization in the vicinity of its Turbhe factory, Rallis closed its operation in 2011 and set up a new manufacturing unit with latest facilities in Dahej, Gujarat.

Rallis defined its sustainability model and continuously working towards safer and environment friendly operations along with conservation of resources like water and energy. The boilers now use bio briquettes in place of furnace oil to have least impact on environment. It has invested heavily to ensure zero liquid discharge in factories first time in those industrial areas. Its water conservation programs (Jal Dhan, Jal Mitra) at Lote and Vidarbha area highly appreciated by community and also by Tata Group. Rallis is among the few Companies in India to receive the prestigious Responsible Care recognition presented by Indian Chemical Council.

People and Culture:

Continuous improvement is the culture of Rallis. It embarked its Business Excellence journey in the year 2002 under Tata Group Excellence framework TBEM and won the prestigious JRDQV award in the year 2011. This was further strengthened by winning CII-EXIM prize in the years 2012 and 2015. To build high performance and high engagement culture, Rallis has taken various people led initiatives TGIF, Rallis Leadership Development Programme RLDP), Competency Assessment and Development Programme (CAD) Gyanpeeth (Train The Trainer), Assessment Centre Rallis Initiative for Skills Enhancement (RISE), Kisme Kitna Hai Dum (KKHD). Rallis remained in the top quartile in all Employee Engagement surveys done in the decade by Gallup and Aon Hewitt. Innovation is core to Rallis Ecosystem and every year we participate in Tata Innovista which is Tata Group platform for showcasing innovation of employees, partners across Tata Group. In the last decade the Company received 21 regional winner titles and 3 global winner titles in Tata Innovista.

To promote safe work environment and to build safety culture across Rallis, continuous effort is being made by everyone by adopting process safety management, Behavior Based Safety (BBS) and leaders are driving safety culture with “Lead by example”.
